Admissions: CJS Application Guidelines

Application Information

(1)Programs

CJS has been offering TWO programs, Intensive Japanese Program (IJP) and Modern Japan Program (MJP) in Fall and Spring semesters. Before starting application, please carefully check each program details and select suitable one for you as each program covers different Japanese language level. Please note you cannot change program once registered.

IJP

Intensive Japanese Program focuses upon developing Japanese language skills.
Japanese language course in this program covers from elementary (JLPT N5) to advance (JLPT N1).

MJP

Modern Japan Program focuses upon deepening your knowledge of historical and contemporary Japanese culture, societies in English – medium classes while learning fundamental Japanese language skills.
Japanese language course in this program covers elementary levels (JLPT N4-N5) only.

The summer program is operated between fall and spring semesters. In order to participate in the summer program, you need to go thorough online application.

(2)Application Requirements

Applicants for the CJS program must meet the following application requirements.

  1. Have completed at least 12 years of formal education or the equivalent, and qualified to enroll at a university.
  2. Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (B) or better on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent at the most recent level of study. (Exchange students with lower GPA maybe considered.)
  3. Have a level of Japanese or English ability sufficient to undergo education at Nanzan University.
  4. MJP applicants must possess the following English ability or the equivalent: Minimum TOEFL iBT 75 over or IELTS 5.5 overall over

(4)Application Fees

Application Fees 10,000JPY

Note:

  • Application Fees are non-refundable for any reasons.
  • Application Fees can be paid online with a credit card. The payer will be charged credit card processing fees.
  • Applications without payment of Application Fees will be automatically withdrawn.
  • Exchange students are waived for the Application Fees.

(5)Application Materials

Upload the No1 to 9 documents below to the Online Application system and send a Letter of Recommendation via email:cjs-forms@ic.nanzan-u.ac.jp.

1 Official Transcript
  • Upload a transcript for your final educational institution.
  • A transcript must show grades and subjects for all semester including the latest one since your enrollment.
  • A transcript must be officially signed by your university/school.

For graduate students:

  • Upload transcripts of both undergraduate and graduate school.
2 Official Bank Statement Upload the bank statement of those who will cover your expenses during staying in Japan.
(e.x. if your father covers the money, please submit the statement of your father's bank account ).
If you plan to cover the amount with scholarship or loans, please submit the letter along with the bank statement.

3 Photo for Student ID card/Certificate of Eligibility(CoE) Upload the photo for your Nanzan Student ID Card and CoE.
The photo must meet the following File Size and Photograph Requirements by the Immigration Service.
Note that you CANNOT USE the same photo of your passport.

4 Casual Photo Upload the casual photo of you.
The photo file size must be Maximum 20 MB.
5 Copy of Passport Upload the scanned copy of Name and Photo page of your passport.
6 Essay The essay form is available on the Online Application system.
Upload the filled-out essay.
7 Japanese Study Information The Japanese Study Information form is available on the Online Application system.

8 Application for Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) Before filling out the form, read carefully the instructions below:

The CoE form is available on the Online Application system.
Fill out ALL the pages of the form and upload.

Please note that your CoE issuance might be delayed if the form is not filled out correctly or financial supportive documents are insufficient.

9 TOEFL iBT or IELTS Transcript Only MJP applicants must upload the English proficiency transcript.

(6)Period of Stay

The period of stay that applicants can apply for depends on the application period.

  • Fall Applicants : Full year or one semester
  • Spring Applicants : One semester

(7)Housing Options

The CJS students will be given the following three housing options.

  • Dormitory (Your specific dormitory preference will not be accepted.)
  • Homestay*
  • Self-arranged

Accommodation

Note:

  • Students should make an accommodation choice carefully. Once an application is submitted, students cannot make a change request on accommodation and move into another housing after enrollment. In other words, the students who apply for two semesters from fall to spring will stay in the same accommodation for the entire period.
  • Students who selected a dorm on application will be placed with one of the following dorms based upon application information.
    • Janssen International Residence
    • Foyer Nanzan
    • Rainbow House
    • Kikusumi Ryo
  • Students will be noticed of the results of their housing assignment around two months before the program starts.

*Nanzan commissions the arrangement of homestay to an arrangement company. Matching information will be finalized and notified to students after notification of housing assignment results.

(8)Registration for Enrollment

Once the admission results are announced, you will receive an invoice and Admission Packet by email. Please make payment and submit necessary documents by the deadline. The amount of tuitions and deadline of payment is as follow:
