Benjamin Colnot (France)

Center for Japanese Studies (Intensive Japanese Program)

As a student from the University of Orleans, in France, I had to choose one Japanese university from among all the partner institutions my university has. Nanzan University was the only one that offered a really interesting program and allowed me to stay with a host family. I am very happy with my choice.

The Intensive Japanese Program (IJP) offers a variety of courses, with Japanese classes in the morning and, in English, Japan-related classes or artistic classes in the afternoon. There are different levels of Japanese classes, so it felt very comfortable to learn Japanese in an efficient way. The classes in the afternoon were also very enriching, with a lot of in-class group work that makes everyone improve their skills together. Another thing is that there are no classes on Wednesdays, so it is easy to join one of the many clubs in the university, or to go for one-day trips around Nagoya. Thanks to this program, I have been able to improve my skills in Japanese and English, learn calligraphy and deepen my knowledge of linguistics, translation, and Japanese society.

Nanzan's CJS also offers us the opportunity to meet other international and Japanese students and to speak different languages in three different places (Japan Plaza, World Plaza, and Stella, Multi-cultural Exchange Lounge). There are some events too, such as trips, that are regularly planned. I have had a great and unforgettable experience in this program.
