Nanzan Anime Study Tour 2024 Review

August 02, 2024

From June 24 to July 13, the Nanzan Anime Study Tour was held, with 8 students participating from 4 countries and regions. The Nanzan Anime Study Tour is a short-term exchange program for international students that has been implemented at our university since 2023. All classes were conducted in English, and the international students learned about Japanese culture and society through lectures and discussions related to anime, as well as three field trips.

To enhance the international students' experience of Japanese culture further, we recruited regular students of Nanzan University who are fans of anime as "Anime Study Buddies" to participate in activities with them.

On the first day of class, June 25, a special lecture by President Kisala on the theme of "Anime and Religion" was held, and the international students actively asked questions to the president. The following day at the Welcome Party, Anime Study Buddies organized and conducted an anime bingo game, fostering friendship and mutual enjoyment among the international students and the Anime Study Buddies.
In regular classes, a wide range of topics related to anime were covered, from its history to anime songs and “pilgrimage” to sites featured in popular anime.

During the field trips, the students visited places such as Ghibli Park, where our university serves as an official partner, as well as Kyoto and Hida-Takayama. In Hida-Takayama, they visited actual locations featured in the movie "Your Name" and together with Anime Study Buddies, they crafted Kumihimo (traditional Japanese braided cords) also seen in the movie.

Through classes, field trips, and interactions with Anime Study Buddies, we believe the international students were able to deepen their interest and understanding of Japan and anime.

We look forward to welcoming many more participants next year!
