Graduate Program in International Area Studies (Master’s Course)
I chose Nanzan University’s graduate school after carefully considering the type of academic environment and guidance I needed for my research. While searching for a suitable program, I learned about the Graduate School of International Area Studies and was strongly attracted by its interdisciplinary nature. The program allows students to study social issues from multiple academic perspectives, which I believe is essential for my research. This comprehensive and flexible academic structure ultimately led me to choose Nanzan University for my graduate studies.
My current research focuses on migration studies, specifically on the everyday life practices and life choices of Chinese returnees living in Nagoya City during their later years. Many of them were left in China as war orphans and returned to Japan after reaching adulthood. Their experiences of crossing national and cultural boundaries have resulted in complex and distinctive forms of identity and self-recognition. Today, most members of this group have entered old age, and I am particularly interested in how they organize their daily lives and make decisions at this stage of life. This research is closely related to the concept of multicultural coexistence that contemporary Japanese society promotes. As migrants with diverse cultural backgrounds, the ways in which Chinese returnees live together with others in Japanese society can offer valuable insights into how multicultural communities are formed in practice. I believe that examining their lived experiences can contribute new perspectives to discussions on Japan’s future migration and social policies.
One of the most appealing aspects of studying at Nanzan University is its rich and international learning environment. The Graduate School of International Area Studies includes regional focuses such as Asia, the United States, and Latin America. Through my coursework, I have been able not only to deepen my understanding of Asian politics, economy, culture, and literature, but also to learn about social and cultural issues in the United States and Latin America. This exposure to multiple regions has helped me develop a broader and more balanced perspective when analyzing social phenomena.
Looking ahead, I plan to continue developing my current research and pursue further studies in a doctoral program. My goal is to deepen my analysis of aging and migration through more extensive fieldwork and theoretical refinement. While my current field site is Nagoya City, I hope to expand my research to other major urban areas such as Tokyo and Osaka in the future. By conducting more comprehensive and comparative research, I aim to gain a deeper understanding of the diverse experiences of elderly migrants in contemporary Japan.
私は、自分の研究にどのような学術的な環境と指導が必要かを慎重に検討した結果、南山大学大学院を選びました。自分の研究に適したプログラムを探している中で、南山大学国際地域文化研究科の存在を知り、その学際性に強く惹かれたのです。この研究科では、多角的な学問的視点から社会問題を研究することができるのですが、それが私の研究に不可欠だと考えています。このような包括的で柔軟な学問体系が、最終的に私が大学院での研究の場として南山大学を選んだ理由です。
現在私は移民研究、とりわけ近年の名古屋市に住む中国帰国者の日常生活の様式や選択行動について研究しています。彼らの多くは戦争孤児として中国に残留し、成人後に日本に帰国しました。国や文化の境界を越えてきた彼らの経験は、複雑で独特なアイデンティティと自己認識の形を生み出してきました。今日は彼らの高齢化が進んでいますが、私は彼らが現在どのように日常生活を営み、意思決定をしているかに特に関心があります。この研究は、現代日本社会が推進する多文化共生の概念と深く関連しています。多様な文化的背景を持つ移民として、中国帰国者が日本社会でどのように他者と共生しているかは、多文化共生コミュニティが実際にどのように形成されるかについて貴重な示唆を与えてくれます。彼らの生活を検証することで、日本の移民政策や社会政策についての議論に新たな視点がもたらされると思います。
南山大学で学ぶ上で最も魅力的な点の一つは、豊かで国際的な学習環境です。国際地域文化研究科は、アジア、米国、ラテンアメリカなど世界各地を研究対象としています。授業を通して、アジアの政治、経済、文化、文学への理解を深めることができただけでなく、アメリカやラテンアメリカの社会・文化問題についても学ぶことができました。これにより、社会現象を分析する際により広範でバランスの取れた視点を養うことができています。
今後は、現在の研究を進め、博士課程でさらなる研究を深めていく予定です。私の目標は、より広範にフィールドワークをしたり理論を洗練させたりして、高齢化と移民に関する分析を深めることです。現在の研究対象フィールドは名古屋市ですが、将来的には東京や大阪など他の大都市圏にも研究を広げたいと考えています。より包括的で比較可能な調査を行うことで、現代日本における高齢者移民の多様な経験をより深く理解することを目指しています。
