Why Study Interaction?

We all have conversations, and interact with the world around us. Most of the time, it goes smoothly, so we don't think about it much. It's like the air we breathe - we only notice it if something is strange.

But most of what we know and do in life comes through interaction. Think of everything you know about the world or how to do. You learned these things through interaction: interaction with other people, or interaction with objects. It doesn't matter the skill, whether it's speaking, cooking, playing soccer, dancing, etc., we learn these things through interaction with the people and things around us. Even culture (which I look at as the collection of ways of doing and thinking about things that shapes how we understand each other and the world) is learned and re-learned through interaction.

When we start to think more about interaction, it opens our eyes to how we relate to each other and the world. We can consider our place and our roles, and how subtle changes in how we do things can affect others. We also can come to see how ways of doing and thinking that are different than our own can be just as "normal" and "reasonable" as our own, because they are connected to processes that we all experience.

In my classes, I will ask students to explore how interaction is shaped by and also shapes our lives, both inside of the classroom and "in the wild" beyond the walls of our classrooms and homes.
