Learning through films

Most people watch films for fun, to have a good time, or just to relax. However, by adopting this passive way of enjoying films, they are missing many opportunities to learn. If we become aware of the act of watching films and we start to pay more attention to them, we can learn in a pleasant way about several topics that may be relevant for our personal or professional development. This is especially true in the case of watching foreign films.

First, if we are interested in learning a foreign language, watching films from the countries where that language is spoken in original version (with audio in foreign language and subtitles in Japanese) will allow us to practice for some hours our listening comprehension, it will make easier to remember vocabulary, it will show us different accents of that language, etc. In short, we will enjoy a brief period of linguistic immersion without leaving our room.

Second, we can learn a great deal about the culture and the society of a country by watching the films that they produce. Culture is a collective entity that is expressed through the images of the films, so we simply need to pay attention to details such as the clothes, the relationships between people, the topics they talk about or not, the way they have fun, and other aspects to learn about that society. And, if we do not understand a cultural reference shown in a film, we can always search for information about that topic and research about it. For this reason, films can be a great starting point to study foreign cultures.

And, thirdly, by watching films we will learn about the techniques and narratives of the cinema. There are many different types of films, genres, and film directors, but people usually tend to watch the same products. If we start to explore and to watch independent, old, or experimental films, we can discover the richness of films as a medium to transmit messages. Also, watching films will help us to improve our ability to write stories, to create characters, to analyze images and to empathize with other people.
