Why do we go to university?
Why do people go to university? Is it because it's expected? Because we need a degree to get a good job? Or because we won't be seen as "real adults" without it?
Another important question is: what makes going to university worth it? Is it making new friends, meeting a great teacher, studying abroad, or learning to think in new ways? These are all amazing things. But if you don't set goals or try new things, four years can pass by without doing any of them.
So, here's my advice: before you start university, think about what you really want to get out of it, besides just the diploma.
For me, university changed my life. The biggest moment was when I spent a year studying in Japan. That one experience made me curious about Japanese culture, and over time, it turned into a passion for Okinawa. Now, I even teach a class about Okinawa in English at Nanzan and conduct research into how Okinawan Literature can be used to promote intercultural competence.
The choices you make in university, especially the ones that take you outside your comfort zone can shape your whole future. So don't be afraid to take chances and explore new things.
