Nanzan Anime Study Tour ~ Unleash your curiosity and discover a new Japan ~

Program Overview

Nanzan University is hosting a 3-week Anime Study Tour this summer again! This tour provides opportunities to explore Japanese cultures and society through the lens of anime. It offers the equivalent of 30 contact hours (*No credits are given) including lectures about Japanese anime in English and 3 field trips to visit anime-related places in central Japan. This year, we plan to enrich activities with Nanzan local students called "Nanzan Anime Study Buddy". Through the activities and experiences, you will also develop intercultural skills and become friends with Japanese students. Why not experience a real Japan together with us?

  • Primary Recruitment: February 1 – 10, 2024

Capacity

  • Maximum 20 students

*If the number of registration exceeds the tour capacity, we will hold a selection.

Eligibility

  • University / college undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in learning Japan through this course. You must be currently enrolled in undergraduate/associate or graduate programs as of June, 2024.
  • Possessing English proficiency for higher education level is required.

Preparation for Registration

  • Official Transcript issued by your university / college. This should contain all the grades including the latest semester of your enrollment period.
  • A scanned copy of valid passport with at least 6 months validity as of June, 2024.

  • Confirmed students will receive an invoice to pay the fees amount above on April 9.
    (Payment is due on April 19, 2024. Those who are not confirmed payment by the due will be automatically cancelled.)
  • The fees include:
    • Hotel 19 nights (with 19 breakfasts) at Toyoko Inn Kanayama
    • Inbound Insurance
    • Pocket Wi-Fi Rental
    • 3 Field Trip Transportation (meals and entrance fees are NOT included)

Course Descriptions

*The course information below is subject to change.

  • This course consists of 13 times of lectures (100 minutes in-class lectures ×13 times) and 3 field trips relating Anime or experiencing Japanese culture, totally 30 contact hours equivalent.
  • No credits are awarded, but a Certificate of Attendance showing with study hours will be issued for the students attended all the classes.
  • All course materials will be provided for students who are confirmed payment.

Field Trips

  • We are going to offer two field trips and a Ghibli Park excursion during your stay.

June 28, 2024 Ghibili Park Ghibli Park is a park that represents the world of Studio Ghibli, which is Japan's best anime production company.
July 3, 2024 Kyoto Students will visit Toei Kyoto Studio Park, where you can experience the world of period dramas. They often collaborate with anime in their exhibitions. You can also explore some popular tourist spots.
July 6, 2024 Hida and Takayama Hida and Takayama, where have the nostalgic charm of old Japan, are sometimes the setting of Anime. In addition, you can experience making Kumihimo, a braided cord.

Activities with Nanzan Students

  • You will have buddies called "Nanzan Anime Study Buddy" while participating in this tour. You will enjoy time with local students to experience a real life in Japan, go on short trips, etc.
