Nanzan Anime Study Tour 2023 Review

September 04, 2023

Program Summary

This summer, Nanzan University launched a new three-week study tour, "Nanzan Anime Study Tour", to explore Japanese culture and society through the lens of anime. Nine students from three different countries participated in our commemorative first tour.

On a typical day, the students attended a discussion-based lecture in the morning.
They were required to read the assigned materials before each lecture so that they were ready to discuss the topic in class. Class discussion was a great way to enhance their critical thinking skills and to learn other opinions and perspectives. Then, they visited many fascinating places on their own or with "Nanzan Anime Study Buddies" who are volunteer Nanzan students who help the participants explore the Nagoya area. Besides those free-time excursions, they also had the opportunity to go on three field trips as part of the tour program.

Because everyone was an anime fan, they got along well with each other and enjoyed themselves thoroughly while sharing their cultures and multiple languages.

Student Voices 2023

  • "The lectures were far more insightful than I had anticipated! Our professor was very helpful in guiding and furthering our academic discussion, and always had something to add to bring more out of class. Anime has never been so thought provoking!"
  • "The trips were very fun, and we were able to do many things you would be unable to do on a normal vacation to Japan. We were able to see a lot of cultural things and scenery."
  • "The Nanzan Anime Study buddies students were all great and very friendly. It was a fun way to experience authentic Japanese youth culture and find places to go that wouldn't be featured on tourist websites."
  • "Regarding the daily life in Japan, I think it's interesting how fast I got used to it. Although many things are so much different than home, the Japanese mentality gave me the possibility to explore it in my own pace. The cities are so big, that you could probably never stop discovering new things, which is beautiful."
