[ Topic ] Integrated curriculum by Learning Communities:
Fostering cooperation between instructors
[ Description ] Learning Communities (abbreviated LC) are communities for study led and directed by the learners themselves.
In advanced education and research in Japan these LCs have garnered attention as a practice restructuring whole curricula through allowing students and instructors to share active experience beyond the classroom in order to deepen ties between different fields of study.
LCs provide daily opportunities for shared learning for students and teachers alike across academic disciplines.
In addition to the restructuring of lessons, these activities require a support system for maintaining cooperative relationships between teachers over the long-term that includes team meetings for active learning and learning projects.
Professor Goshima’s report will cover the implementation of the Learning Community concept in the required foundational courses at Nanzan Junior College and there will be an opportunity for participants to discuss what is needed to foster cooperation between instructors in building an integrated curriculum.
