Institute for Social Ethics Colloquium #4, 2013

May 16, 2013

[ Date/time ] Saturday June 8, 2013, from 3:00 p.m.
[ Venue ] Room R49, 4F, Building R, Nagoya Campus, Nanzan University
[ Topic ] Examining the potential for a political science of sound
[ Speaker ] Asahiko Hanzawa
(Associate Professor, Faculty of International Studies at Meiji Gakuin University)
[ Description ] Modern international political science has largely focused on written information.
We have invited international political scientist Asahiko Hanzawa to speak with us as we question the status quo of political science and look to the potential in a political science of sound.
While looking at historical relationships between music and politics/society, by analyzing sound in its many forms including popular music, music as art, ambient sounds and the spoken word (dialects, common language and voice) we will reexamine important issues of political science related to problems of modernization, nationalism and globalization as well as identity, creation of boundaries and cross-border effects.
This discussion will also touch on the issue of “proof” of aural information.
The broad variety of materials available will be put to work as we look at everything from national anthems and musical styles to genres such as jazz, rock, electronic, classic, pop and folk and their political and historical influence.
[ Commentator ] Hiroyuki Tosa
(Professor, Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies, Kobe University)
