Institute for Social Ethics Colloquium #4, 2012

August 22, 2012

[ Date/time ] Wednesday September 12, 2012, from 4:00 p.m.
[ Venue ] Room R32, 3F, Building R, Nagoya Campus, Nanzan University
[ Lecturer ] Masakazu Matsumoto (Associate Professor, Faculty of Education at Shimane University)
[ Topic ] Humanitarianism and Pacifism – Morality of the use of armed force in defense of others
[ Overview ] The philosophy pacifism that promotes demilitarization and non-violence has undergone notable renewed criticism since the end of the Cold War.
Condemnation is leveled at the seeming lack of responsibility of taking a solitary pacifist stance while simply observing from afar humanitarian crises arising from separatist struggles and civil wars in countries around the world such as the former Yugoslavia and nations of Africa.
Is this criticism deserved?
Or, is there a trap of some kind in the concept of ethical use of force?
In this colloquium, we have invited Political Philosopher Masakazu Matsumoto to address criticisms of humanitarian interventionists and discuss the contemporary effectiveness of pacifism.
[ Commentator ] Hirotsugu Oba (Instructor in the Nanzan University Faculty of Policy Studies)
