“Economic Relations between the Tokai Region and the United States: Industrial Strategy and International Competitiveness”
On 12 November, 2010, an international symposium on “Economic Relations between the Tokai Region and the United States: Industrial Strategy and International Competitiveness” was held at the Nanzan University Nagoya Campus. Hosted by the Nanzan University Center for American Studies and co-hosted by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation and the East-West Center in Washington, it attracted many participants, including a large number of Nanzan students.
The symposium featured Satu Limaye (Director, East-West Center in Washington), Yoshiyuki Kasai (Chairman, JR Central) and Kazuhiko Yamase (Chief Editor, Asahi Shimbun “be”) as panelists, with Takakazu Yamagishi, associate professor of the Department of British and American in Studies in the Faculty of Foreign Studies of Nanzan University, serving as master of ceremonies.
During the symposium, each of the panelists gave their own compelling views on Japan-US economic relations and economic relations with China. Questions from local Japanese students and Chinese students about how Japan should approach its relations with China in the context of concern about the recent deterioration in relations between the two countries produced lively debate with the panelists.
The symposium provided a marvelous opportunity for students to be intellectually stimulated by three outstanding speakers.
