US Ambassador to Japan John V. Roos visits Nanzan University

2010.11.10

On 5 November, 2010, US Ambassador to Japan John V. Roos visited Nanzan University to give a lecture to students.

The lecture was delivered as part of the Nanzan University Department of British and American Studies “Program for the Improvement of Multi-skills in Education to Enable Students to Participate in the Modern Globalized World,” which is supported under the 2009 University Education - Student Assistance Promotion Project “Theme A” University Education Promotion Program, run by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

After the lecture, Ambassador Roos answered a diverse range of questions posed by students, such as “Why is the health care reform proposed by the Obama administration unpopular in the United States?” “Did your view of nuclear weapons change after you attended the Peace Memorial Ceremony in Hiroshima?” “What is your view of the importance of Japan-US relations?” and “In the United States there seems to be broad support for venture enterprises, but why do you think that the fostering of such enterprises isn’t making progress in Japan?” He was also even asked, “Do you and President Obama have any inside stories that have not appeared in the media?” Ambassador Roos took time to provide a thorough answer to each and every question, and at the end of the lecture, he went out into the audience to shake hands with all who had attended, finishing the event on the same pleasant note that he had maintained throughout.

It was a marvelous experience for the students to be able to interact directly with the United States Ambassador to Japan, someone whom they had previously only ever been able to see through the media.
