Throughout the duration of four years in the Department of British and American studies I would like students to obtain a mastery of English that is equivalent to that of their Japanese. Our faculty consists of not only American teachers, but British and Australian teachers as well so students can acquire the language from a broad range of English-speaking countries.
As freshmen and sophomores, from Monday through Friday, students immerse themselves in training by “listening, speaking, reading, and writing” English. For three of those days the LL room and computers are used. Our faculty of eight brings students uniquely themed “English workshops” where teachers only speak English and students respond in English.
As juniors and seniors, students utilize their acquired English skills to engage in applied research in areas such as linguistics, literature, foreign language teaching, communication, ideology, politics, diplomacy, history, and economics of English-speaking countries. Furthermore, during practicum, students thoroughly debate on a theme of their interest using English and Japanese.
