Alumni Network Former International Students

Kyle Serra

Just as an NIJ700 class finished, CJS graduate Kyle Serra appeared and surprised Okada-sensei. Kyle had checked the CJS notice board as soon as he arrived on campus and found out where the class was being held. His sudden appearance surprised everyone, but it was in keeping with a former CJS student that he was able to easily find the class. Okada-sensei even commented that it was a real coincidence in that she had recently been thinking how Kyle spoke such beautiful Japanese.

Kyle said that he had arrived in Japan three months earlier and is currently working as an international coordinator at the Nagoya City Office. He said that this week he is busy looking after some guests from Australia and other foreign countries, taking them around various places in the city.

He said that he often uses Japanese when dealing with people who come to the City Office. When Kyle was asked if people are surprised when he used his excellent Japanese skills in these situations he laughed as he replied, “Yes, they are.” When Kyle was studying at the CJS he could speak Japanese just as well as local students, and so now his Japanese is near perfect. Okada-sensei smiled as she said, “He speaks better than me now!”

Kyle hopes to become a translator in future, and seeing him work hard these days is an indication that his dream will come true before too long.
