Alumni Network Former International Students

Not long after the 2012 Fall Semester started, Pao-san and Tibby-san dropped in to the CJS Office. It was a very hot day despite it already being October, and being from hot countries they were surprised at the heat in Nagoya. In the office in the new Building R, they enjoyed meeting Okada-sensei and Tsuda-sensei again and talking about the time they shared together. We hope that they will drop in again in future.

Rattanaseriwong Sangtiean

As introduced in this Alumni Network Former International Students, her previous visit was three years ago in 2009. She finished the CJS program in 2007, and in 2009, after graduating from Chulalongkorn University, her own university back in Thailand, she entered the masters course at Osaka University. Specializing in comparative linguistics, from September 2012 she progressed to her doctoral studies and is now working hard on her thesis and doctoral presentation on a comparative study of the Thai and Japanese languages.

She said that at the CJS, Okada-sensei and Tsuda-sensei's classes left a particularly strong impression with her, and that during her time at Nanzan University she learned not just Japanese, but also how to study. She said that learning an efficient and logical approach to study stood her in good stead after progressing to postgraduate level and pursuing her research, in particular when it came to writing style and choosing the correct words to use.

She recalled how once in Tsuda-sensei's class they were given some haiku as homework and when she was walking home from university thinking about the haiku, before long she got totally lost. Her hobby is still play go, and she still gets engrossed in the game. Both are episodes that are typical of her dedicated approach to life.

Mino City in Osaka, where she lives, is very pretty at this time of year with the changing colors of the leaves on the trees. She said that she really likes the waterfalls and the totally evocative nature of the place. If you have cause to be in Mino, how about dropping in to say hello to her in her research office?
