CHEON Keunung

On 15 November 2010, at a time when the trees on the campus were just starting to assume their autumn colors, Keunung Cheon, an exchange student to the CJS two years ago from the Catholic University of Korea, came to visit us.

Last August, he graduated from the Catholic University of Korea and ahead of starting to work in the field of computer programming, he was writing programs to submit to prospective employers.

He came to Japan on holiday before taking up employment and so decided to drop in to the CJS to say hello. He says that he still keeps in touch with friends from his IJ600 and IJ700 classes by sending e-mail and SMS text messages in Japanese.

Unfortunately, he has few opportunities to use his Japanese language ability these days, and even went as far as to say, “I’ve forgotten so much of it!” but the impression we got when he visited was that he can still speak excellent Japanese.

When he casts his mind back to his time at the CJS, he says that he enjoyed every moment, but does regret that he did not travel more and do more of the things that he really wanted to do during his stay in Japan. His message for those students now studying at the CJS is that while study is of course the most important thing, so as to avoid having regrets afterwards, students should also try to go to the places that attract them and try to do the things that they want to do.

When he was in Japan he thought that he’d be able to get to those places any time he liked, but after he went back to the Republic of Korea he realized that it’s not quite so easy after all.
