Alumni Network Former International Students

Matthew William COLPITTS,

On 28 October, 2010, on a chilly day when an autumnal rain front covered Japan, former CJS student Matthew Colpitts came to visit.

He originally came to study in Japan through the IES Abroad system from the University of Mississippi, and after that continued on a self-funded basis, studying Japanese language and culture at the CJS for a total of one and a half years.

In order to finish his degree at the University of Mississippi he returned to the United States after completing IJ700, and subsequently his efforts to find employment bore fruit, so from two years ago he has been working in Japan. He now works for a jewelry (particularly pearls) wholesale dealer in Nagoya.

At first, he struggled with some aspects of working in Japan, but he says that he has now become used to communicating with his company president, who speaks in Kansai dialect, and takes all of his work-related notes in Japanese.

His message to those students currently studying in the CJS is, “If you work hard, your efforts will be rewarded.”
We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
