Bruce Suttmeier

On June 13, Bruce Suttmeir visited the University for the first time in 20 years. When he studied at the CJS, he was a student at Rochester University, but is now an associate professor at Lewis & Clark College, where he is in charge of the study of Modern Japanese Literature. Back in 1989, the CJS had its staff research rooms and administrative offices on the 3rd and 4th floors of Building L, and the classrooms were in the same building. The extremely close proximity of the facilities used by international students, teaching and office staff saw the three groups develop a good relationship with each other. No doubt looking at the University buildings as they stand now, Dr. Suttmeier would have been surprised by the amount of development that has occurred at Nanzan University in the past 20 years. Judging from his comments, he has very fond memories of Nanzan from his time with us as a student, but I actually sensed that those feelings have grown even stronger through the years.
