Leimei Julia Chiu

One other former students, Leimei Julia Chiu took part in “Face to Face Meeting with Senpai” held on 23 November.

These days, Julia is the Director of Global Communications at the International Design Center Nagoya, a busy career woman who spends her time flying all over the world, but when she was studying at CJS she was a really quiet student. We all thought that once she graduated from university she would get married straightaway and start a family, so it’s hard to imagine Julia’s current lifestyle. When we spoke to her, we soon realized that she has become an attractive woman, lively and cheerful, with a natural aura that draws you to her. One of her memories she spoke about from her time at CJS was when she joined the students in her year group in the J7 Japanese course in going to a BBQ at the house of Komai-sensei who lived in Kyoto. Komai-sensei passed away about ten years ago, but it is really pleasing for us to know that there are former students who still have fond memories of him.

Julia said that at “Face to Face Meeting with Senpai” she fielded a flurry of questions from current students on the subject of how to get a job in Japan. She explained that there is the choice of working either for foreign-owned companies or for Japanese companies, but that it is easier working for foreign-owned companies. However, the opinion was put forward that working for Japanese companies would actually be better in terms of displaying one’s talent to the full.

Her comments certainly were just what we would expect from someone working in the front line in a Japanese company. No doubt the students benefited greatly from her words of advice.
