Special Event Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Center for Japanese Studies Japanese Language and Exchange Students – Connecting Past, Present & Future – Distinguished Lecture Series, Vol.2

On January 9, 2015, Professor Kumiko Sakoda, Director of Center for JSL Research and Information at National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics, gave us a lecture at Nanzan Nagoya Campus. We really appreciate Sakoda-sensei for coming to Nanzan to give us a fantastic lecture concerning the past, present and future of research of Japanese language learners. She lectured what Japanese language teachers and instructors should learn from research on language learners. Sakoda-sensei also talked about learners’ spoken corpus of Japanese and developmental sequence of verbs, which was very technical and very interesting. In light of the wide range of current issues surrounding the teaching and learning of Japanese as a foreign language, Sakoda-sensei is disseminating non-native speakers' communicative abilities in Japanese. Everyone who attended was truly inspired by her message and discussions have continued.

2015 Spring Semester CJS Entrance Ceremony

On Friday, 9 January, the 2015 Spring Semester Entrance Ceremony was held for 31 new full-time students and 2 part-time students, a total of 33 new students. In his greeting, Nanzan University President Michael Calmano, S.V.D., said that he wants each of the students to think about how they can most effectively spend the Spring Semester period through until May. At the CJS Welcome Party, Professor Masahiro Hoshino, Director of the Nanzan University Center for International Education also wished the students well in having a worthwhile stay. We too hope that the students will use this five month-period to improve their Japanese and broaden their horizons.

2014 Fall Semester CJS Party: December 17, 2014

On my final day, it finally decided to snow in Nagoya. My host family left me off at the local subway. Snow fell upon me as I carried my luggage to the station. I gave them all hugs and as my train departed my two younger siblings chased the train until I could no longer see them. This was one of the most touching scenes that I will always remember. I met my Japanese friend at Aratamabashi station and rode to Kanayama, where I then took the train to the airport. I couldn’t believe that I would be leaving it. I gave her a final good bye hug and went off. As I headed to the airport, I realized that I would definitely come back to Japan, especially Nagoya. Perhaps again as a student of Nanzan University. If I could do it all over again, I would do it in a heartbeat. It was a very interesting and unique experience that I will always remember.

Official Visit to Vietnam : November 14, 2014 - November 16, 2014

Nanzan University, represented by Mariko Kato of the Center for International Education Office, attended the Japan Education Fair held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on Sunday, November 16.

This fair is aimed at promoting “study in Japan” for students wishing to study in Japan by providing up-to-date institution information and it supports students to achieve fruitful lives in Japan. Many of young motivated people gathered at our booth and our booth was crowded with them throughout the fair. We would like to express our deep appreciation to Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh (CJS 2010-2011) and Ms. Miharu HANJI (Department of Policy Studies, 2005-2009) for helping us with the event as interpreters, telling their experience in Japan to the visitors with enthusiasm.

Nanzan-kai gatherings were held one day before the fairs, on November 14 in Hanoi and on November 15 in Ho Chi Minh City. Those alumni who are living in the city got together and enjoyed meeting in a friendly atmosphere. Not only did they enjoy chatting about their memories of school life at Nanzan but also they exchanged local information. I found this gathering was very valuable and hope it would continue for many years to come and expand the wave of exchange further. Finally, I would like to thank all the former students for the warm hospitality extended to me during my stay in Vietnam!”

Seinan Festival 2014: Sunday, November 2, 2014 – Monday, November 3, 2014

Participating in the Seinan-sai, Nanzan Festival at Seto Campus, as a group of international students from the dormitory, Seto Koryu Kaikan, was a wonderful experience. Through several meetings at the dorm, we decided to present both a Chinese dumpling stand and a Vietnamese spring roll booth. We discussed frequently and prepared for several months in order to satisfy our guests. Now we feel so rewarded, because everyone who dropped by our booths told us that they loved our food very much.

Since this year’s Seinan Festival is the last one to be presented by both Faculty of Policy Studies and Faculty of Science and Engineering, we already miss this event. Because of this fact, the whole experience was bittersweet. We would be happy if the Seinan-sai can be held in next year as well.

Home Coming Day: Sunday, November 2, 2014

Coming back to Nanzan after nearly two years was a bit of a blast from the past. Walking the hallways that I used to take as an exchange student brought back a flood of wonderful memories. Studying abroad here was a highlight, if not THE highlight, of my undergraduate career. Nanzan, and Nagoya, became my second home. I look forward to visiting often in the years to come.

CJS Festa 2014 Fall: October 29, 2014

During the CJS Festa, I really enjoyed telling Nanzan students about my home University. I was able to talk to a few Japanese friends, and meet many new people as well. I hope it made them interested in visiting, or even studying abroad in Iowa, if they have the chance.

Official visit to Beijing, China: October 24-26, 2014

Professor Nozomu Yamada, the Dean of Faculty of Policy Studies, Professor Masahiro Hoshino, the Director of the Center for International Education, and Ms. Noriko Yajima with the Center for International Education Office officially visited Beijing, China. They had a meeting with the directors of State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. Beijing Nanzan-kai was also held. Our graduate student Ms. XUAN Xuan Li accompanied as a translator during their stay. We all thank her for her cooperation.

It has been two months since I came back home after I graduated from the Faculty of Policy Studies at Nanzan University. I was always thinking that even if it’s not much, I would be grateful if there is anything that I could do for my alma mater here in China, but my chance to help has come so suddenly. I was so lucky to work with Yamada-sensei, Hoshino-sensei and Yajima-san as Nanzan’s official translator while they were in Beijing to meet the executives from State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs.

Even when I was at Nanzan, I was asked to be a translator several times but I never could be satisfied with my translations. After I graduated, I learned the reason when my master from Nanzan told me “If you wish to be a good translator, you should learn more about your mother tongue before learning a foreign language.” I found out there was a lack in my understanding on my own culture and language. I’m already back in my country, but still learning from Nanzan.

A Chinese proverb says, “He who teaches me for one day is my father for life.” I believe my father, Nanzan University, will teach me for eternity. Nanzan University is really a home away from home for us, the members of Beijing Nanzan-kai.

Ryugaku Fair and Reunion meeting "NANZAN-KAI" in Jakarta

Saturday, October 18, 2014 - Sunday, October 19, 2014

It was really nice to meet Hoshino-sensei in Jakarta. Thank you very much for inviting me and my family to the Nanzan-kai. It was indeed an unforgettable moment after away from Japan since 2010. Also, having an opportunity to represent Nanzan University in the Japan Education Fair, Jakarta was also a big honor for me. It was amazing to see many universities from Japan representing their program for Indonesian students. I do hope that Indonesia students would utilize this opportunity to pursue their bright future by experiencing their study in Japan.

Japanese Language and Exchange Students – Connecting Past, Present & Future –

Distinguished Lecture Series, Vol.1

Professor Sukero Ito
Tokyo University of Foreign Studies
Chairman, the Society for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language

We had the chance to listen to a talk about the Standards of Japanese education from Professor Sukero Ito from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. The evaluation of language proficiency has changed all around the world, and because of globalization Japanese education is changing towards this new trend. This new evaluation of proficiency is based in "can-do statements" and it is centered on specific goals. I think this kind of special talk is really useful for those who want to be language teachers, but also for those students who are learning languages, since it is the key to a new and more effective approach to them.

2015 Japan Education Fair in Seoul

Professor Kiyoshi Aoki, from the Department of Law, and I would like to thank Ms. CHOI Eun Jin, Ms. PARK Hye Bin and Ms. YOON Ohk Ju for their assists during the Japan Education Fair in introducing Nanzan program to young Korean students who highly motivated in studying abroad in Japan. Aoki-sensei and I really appreciate these former students for staying so close to us after their graduation from Nanzan.

Also, thank you all for coming to our reunion meeting “Seoul Nanzan-kai.” and making it a memorable experience. I met three ex-exchange students from Hannam University and five of Policy Studies Faculty graduate students. It was an enriching experience for me to see how everyone has continued to grow since leaving Nanzan and to hear about their life experiences. It just went by too quickly and there wasn't more time to spend together. I am looking forward to creating a huge network of our Nanzan alumni including former international students from Yonsei University and Catholic University of Korea. Maybe the next get together Nanzan-kai should involve more of the alumni members of years before and behind your time at Nanzan.

During the two week long guidance, we got to know more about the school, and after the entrance ceremony, we actually became members of Nanzan University. This is a rare chance to study in Japan, and also has been a dream for me since I was a little girl. I am really thankful for my family, teachers and friends for their support. Especially, I am thankful that Nanzan provides this wonderful opportunity for us!

I can’t wait to study Japanese and the culture of Japan! Besides, I am looking forward to meeting friends from different countries!

In the CJS Fall Semester Entrance Ceremony held on Thursday, 4 September, 127 students formally entered the CJS. This total was made up of 126 full-time students and 1 part-time student. The students were very busy in the first week with placements tests, campus tours, welcome parties and various types of orientation as well as aspects of organizing their lives in Japan such as opening bank accounts and setting up health insurance policies. We hope that the new intake of students can smoothly organize their lives in Japan and vigorously apply themselves to their studies this semester. Learning a new language is not an easy task, but solid effort will pay off.

Ryugaku Fair and Reunion meeting "NANZAN-KAI" in Bangkok

The Japan Education Fair 2014 Bangkok was held on Sunday, 31 August. Nanzan University represented by Noriko Yajima of the Center for International Education Office promoted the option of young Thai people interested coming to Japan to study, and to Nanzan University as a venue for that study. We are very grateful for the assistance we received with interpreting from our former students, Ms. Pattraporn TRISIRISUK, Ms. Patsanun NOOROD and Mr. Sani MANJAITON. They all talked about their own experiences at Nanzan, which seemed to make the prospective students who came to our booth even more interested in taking the plunge and studying in Japan.

The night before the Fair, the reunion meeting “Bangkok Nanzan-kai” was held. We are truly thankful that people are connected through their experience at Nanzan. We sincerely hope that these connections will serve you all well in your future endeavors. We are looking forward to seeing you again in near future.

Graduation Ceremony for Faculty of Policy Studies students who commenced in the 2014 Fall Semester

Wednesday, August 27, 2014

What can we do in four years? While we could gain 10 kilograms by eating cookies, we could lose 10 kg by daily exercise.

Similarly, while we could waste four years by staying indoors, we could make them fruitful ones by activities and efforts.

I had an amazing, great four-year at Nanzan Seto Campus. I have determined to continue my efforts in order to bridge between China and Japan, utilizing knowledge and experiences that I gained at Nanzan for my social life.

I shall value every moment in coming days and years.

Taipei Japan Education Fair, July 20, 2014

It was my pleasure to attend and support this Study Abroad Fair.

On that day, I, as an alumnus, introduced the education systems and the advantages of Nanzan University, and shared my experiences studying in Nanzan University to those visitors who considered the possibility to study in Japan.

Regarding visitors’ questions, they most concerned about the support systems which universities can provide to overseas students.

Thus, upon this point, I told them how Nanzan University is extremely unique with well-established support systems for overseas students and makes great efforts developing a global view for the overseas students from all over the world.

I would be glad to help more and more students know Nanzan University and know they have happy and fruitful life studying in Nanzan University. I am also happy to advocate myself as an alumnus to promote this University.

2013-2014 CJS Closing Ceremony: Saturday, May 17, 2014

Today I finally graduated from the Study Abroad Program at Nanzan University. I can’t believe I’ve already been in Japan for nine whole months. Ever since middle school, coming to Japan has been a dream for me. Even now, I want to continue to study more about Japan and Japanese literature. Even with stress, and difficult experiences, from the bottom of my heart I believe that any experience can be a good experience if you work hard. With that said, who you end up experiencing those moment’s with is also important. Also, in order to have a good experience you can’t go around thinking “this is my comfort zone so I’m fine here,” you have to do some things you normally wouldn’t do, or studying abroad would probably be pretty difficult. But I really haven’t had that problem at all! When I came to Japan, I found a family in the Rainbow House members, made fun memories with the other exchange students, and got a really cool study abroad experience at the Center for Japanese Studies, Nanzan University.

Thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart.

Visitors from Qinghai, China: Tuesday, April 15, 2014

Executives and Directors of Provincial Department of Education of Qinghai, People's Republic of China visited Nanzan University. We have been creating good friendship and positive interactions for over a decade through the exchange program like NAP (Nanzan Asian Program) or International Student Admissions for our Policy Studies Department. Their visit was a compliment to every one of us at Nanzan University. We wish we would have had more time to talk, but perhaps that will happen another day maybe in Qinghai. It was good to meet good friends after so many years.

Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Bangkok NANZAN-KAI: Sunday March 23, 2014

It was such a pleasure to be able to attend Bangkok Nanzan-Kai and meet teachers, former students and the prospective one. The gathering allowed me to talk with people who have shared the same experience which brought back the nostalgic memories I once had in Japan. For us, the alumni, Nanzan University is more than just an institution, but a home and a community where we feel the sense of belonging.

In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Nanzan University for organizing such event for the alumni. This way, we are able to come into contact with one another, create new connections and widen our own visions, which can possibly become an open door that may be useful in the future.

I really do hope that the connections among the alumni will continue to grow stronger and become more like a family. As time passes, I am certain that this tree of friendship will be as beautiful as one can imagine.

3rd Shanghai NANZAN-KAI

I am extremely grateful to have been able to attend the latest Shanghai Nanzan-kai gathering on Saturday March 1, 2014. I met many people for the first time, but we soon became friends and all enjoyed the warm and welcoming atmosphere. This was no doubt because we were conscious of our shared experience of having studied at Nanzan University. Our connection with our alma mater will continue for many years if we remain aware of this shared experience. I learned a great deal from hearing teachers and former students talking about their memories from Nanzan and their plans for the future. I am very keen to take part in a Shanghai Nanzan-kai gathering again in future.
