Dr. Markus Gabor (CJS 1982 Fall - 1983 Spring)

On January 27, 2012, former CJS student Dr. Markus Gabor visited Nanzan University President Michael Calmano, S.V.D. Markus Gabor, who came from Hungary in 1982 to study at the Center for Japanese Studies came to visit Nanzan with fellow graduates Ikai-san and Morita-san (husband of Marie- Agnès Morita who used to teach at our Department of French Literature) and had a pleasant chat with Nanzan University President Michael Calmano, S.V.D. After graduating from the CJS, he gathered together all the results from his research at Nanzan and acquired a PhD back in Hungary. From that point on, he was active as one of the very few experts on Japanese affairs in Hungary, writing a diverse range of articles on the Japanese language, Japanese economics and management. He also had a book published on his experiences as a foreign student in Japan, which we introduce below.

2011 Spring Semester Center for Japanese Studies Entrance Ceremony

On Thursday, 12 January, the entrance ceremony for the 2012 Spring Semester Center for Japanese Studies was held in Building R on the Nagoya Campus. At the ceremony a total of 32 students from eight countries and regions were accepted into the CJS. Including those who are continuing on from the previous semester, this means that there are now 128 international students enrolled in courses at the CJS.

As Nanzan University President Michael Calmano, S.V.D. touched upon in his welcome speech, studying abroad offers an important opportunity to open new doors, and cooperate with people to find new directions in life. In the borderless environment that is Nanzan University, we hope that our new students will open new doors on international understanding.

The President’s address is here.

Greeting Cards from the CJS

We have sent greeting cards to all of the people who took part in the Nanzan-kai gatherings, the Nanzan University International Students Alumni Network Home Coming Day and the Japan Education Fairs held in various countries. We hope that you will have a marvelous year and look forward to meeting everyone again soon.

Home Coming Day

On November 3, 2011, the third Home Coming Day was held. Many people came to the campus for the first time in a while, letting their old teachers know what they have been doing and looking at photographs and textbooks that brought back fond memories.

It was not just former students who came along. People who are interested in hosting international students in their homes and students who studied overseas during their time at Nanzan also dropped in to say hello.

The Home Coming Day also received a mention on the JASSO website as an example of the initiatives being undertaken by the Nanzan University International Students Alumni Network.

Japan Education Fairs held all over the world

In 2011, JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) held Japan Education Fairs all over the world. Nanzan University was represented firstly at Taipei in Taiwan on Sunday July 23 (previously reported), then on Saturday September 4 in Bangkok in Thailand, Saturday September 17 in Seoul in South Korea, Saturday October 8 in Jakarta in Indonesia and Saturday October 29 in Hanoi in Vietnam.

In Bangkok, unfortunately the gathering of the Bangkok Ryugakusei Nanzan-kai that we had planned to hold the evening before the Japan Education Fair had to be cancelled because of a typhoon, but at the Fair itself it was great to see the following former students come along to help at the booth as interpreters: Ms. PANKOT Suttida (CJS 2008 Fall – 2009 Spring), Ms. TAMMAMON Potjanat (CJS 2010 Fall – 2011 Spring), Ms. KANOKVAREERAT Athiwan (CJS 2010 Fall – 2011 Spring), and Ms. LUENGWIPAT Kanpitcha (CJS 2010 Fall – 2011 Spring). After the Fair in which so many people participated, those involved enjoyed a fantastic meal of delicious Thai food.

At the Japan Education Fair in Seoul, we were lucky enough to have Ms. HAN Eunjin and Ms. BAEK Song-yi from the Catholic University of Korea who had both studied at the CJS in from the 2010 Fall Semester to the 2011 Spring Semester. There is no doubt that having such people in the booth who have studied at Nanzan University explain the ins and outs of the experience to prospective young students makes a huge difference in terms of getting the message across effectively.

The Seoul Ryugakusei Nanzan-kai was held the day before the Fair. Once again, Mr. KANG Kyeng Dong (graduated from the Faculty of Policy Studies in 2007), who has played a central role in organizing Nanzan-related gatherings mobilized a good number of former students and graduates.

The following people took part:

  • Ms. LEE, Hae Won(Graduated Faculty of Policy Studies 2005)
  • Mr. KANG, Kyeng Dong(Graduated Faculty of Policy Studies 2007)
  • Ms. MATSUOKA, Rina(Graduated Department of Psychology and Human Relations, Faculty of Humanities 2005)
  • Ms. LINTON, Diana Marie(CJS 2008 Fall, 2009 Fall – 2010 Spring)
  • Mr. OH, Il Seog(Graduated Faculty of Policy Studies 2010)
  • Ms. SEOK, Jin Hee(Graduated Faculty of Policy Studies 2010)
  • Ms. KIM, Min Ji(CJS 2009 Fall)
  • Ms. LEE, Hyun Ji(CJS 2009 Fall – 2010 Spring)
  • Ms. YANG, Myoung Eun(CJS 2009 Fall - 2010 Spring)
  • Ms. HAN, Eunjin(CJS 2010 Fall - 2011 Spring)
  • Ms. PAEK, Song-yi(CJS 2010 Fall – 2011 Spring)
  • Ms. LEE, Ju Ho(Graduate Faculty of Policy Studies 2012)

In Jakarta, Ms. Karatoruan Angelique Steffanie, Ms. Novia Dewi Seminarti and Ms. Nurdianti Indah Pratiwi, who had been studying at the CJS until the 2011 Spring Semester helped out as interpreters at our booth. The Nanzan-kai gathering the previous night, which also served as a preliminary meeting for the Fair, was attended by a small number of people, but it was marvellous that Mr. Iwan Taufiq Purwanto, who has been such an important figure in this region as a senior in the group could also attend. We also understand that Mr. Agus Suherman Suryadimulya is extremely busy in his regular activities, but we do appreciate the efforts that he makes to coordinate the attendance of former students at these gatherings, and hope that with the support of the young group we will be able to hold more Nanzan-kai gatherings in future.

The Hanoi Nanzan-kai was held the evening before the Fair. It was a large gathering organized mainly by Mr. NYUGEN Duc Khoa who studied for two years at the CJS from 1995, Ms. NYUGEN Thu Trang who graduated from the Faculty of Policy Studies in 2004 and Ms. Saki NAKANE who graduated from the Faculty of Policy Studies in 2010.

It was not just former CJS students or those who had been through the faculties and graduate schools at Nanzan University, but there were also Japanese graduates who had been posted to Hanoi with work and a Japanese wife who now lives in Vietnam with her Vietnamese husband.

Ms. Do Thi Thu Trang, who graduated from the Faculty of Policy Studies in 2010, was in charge of the interpreting for us at the Fair. Many other people who had attended the Hanoi Nanzan-kai also came along to help out, in fact so many that they couldn’t all fit in the booth and they kindly brought along flowers to decorate the booth, so ours was probably the most colorful and brightest of all the university booths. The people who came to ask about studying at Nanzan were able to have their questions answered in Vietnamese by the former students, so it was a booth that was easy for prospective students to approach.

The members of the Hanoi Nanzan-kai who took part were as follows:

  • Mr. Nguyen Duc Khoa (CJS 1995-1997)
  • Ms. Can Thuy Lien (CJS 1997-1998) with her daughter Ms. Nguyen Phuong My Linh
  • Ms. Nguyen Thu Trang (Policy Studies 2000-2004)
  • Ms. Dao Thu Phuong (CJS 2003-2004)
  • Ms. Do Thi Thu Trang (Policy Studies 2005-2009)
  • Ms. TAKUNO, Natsuko (Policy Studies 2006-2011)
  • Ms. Nguyen Phuong Thao (CJS 2008-2009)

People who unfortunately could not appear:

  • Ms. Nakane, Saki (Policy Studies 2005-2010)
  • Ms. Khong Thi Xuyen (Policy Studies 2006-2010)
  • Mr. Nguyen Thanh Do (CJS 2009-2010)

Faculty of Policy Studies 2011 Fall Semester Entrance Ceremony

On Saturday, 15 September, with special invited guests from outside in attendance, the entrance ceremony for the Faculty of Policy Studies 2011 Fall Semester entry was held. A total of 13 students who had come to Japan in early September from four countries and regions entered the faculty after undergoing a four-day orientation. The new students seemed to relax at the tea after the ceremony, but they started their lectures from the very next day, 16 September. We hope that the next four years of study with us will prove to be a significant experience in shaping the future of the new students.

The 3rd Taipei Ryugakusei Nanzankai

On Saturday, July 23rd, the Taipei Nanzankai was held at the Osmanthus Room, Brother Hotel located at Nan-Jing East Road of Taipei, Taiwan with eight people taking part, including myself from Nanzan University. This Nanzankai was held as part of a double “2011 Japan Education Fair” event in Taipei on July 24th.

Wonderful Szechuan cuisine, good old Nanzan day stories, everlasting smile…We really had a good time.

On December 3rd of this coming winter, Nanzan University president Michael Calmano, S.V.D. will visit Taipei and we are planning to have another Taipei Ryugakusei Nanzankai. Please be a part of our next Nanzankai.

Report Meeting on the establishment of an Alumni Network of Former International Students

On 2 April 2011, people who have contributed through the years to the success of the Center for Japanese Studies were invited to an explanatory session on the current organizational structure and programs of the CJS and a Report Meeting on the establishment of an Alumni Network of Former International Students. 2nd Shanghai Nanzankai held

This gathering was held at the Yuanyuan Restaurant from 6.00pm on Saturday, 26 March, 2011. This time there was a good number of former students of the Faculty of Policy Studies, so it was a really lively, fun atmosphere. In addition to Vice-president for International Affairs Noboru Kinoshita, and Professor Emeritus Noriko Ban, Professor Liudi Lu of the East China Normal University also attended. When Professor Lu proposed a toast, his statement that he never wants to forget that Japan values harmony was well received by all in attendance. When it was mentioned that Japanese graduates of Nanzan University occasionally have gatherings in Shanghai, the suggestion was made that they should also come along to the next Shanghai Nanzankai. Also, as a gesture of support for Japan at its time of need after the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Nanzankai offered 10,000 yen to the University’s disaster relief fund. In closing, I would like to offer my gratitude to Ms. Fang Yu who again organized this gathering. Her efforts are greatly appreciated.
