News from Xavier University (the Philippines) ;

As a response to the thousands of people who were affected by Typhoon Washi that hit Cagayan de Oro in Northern Mindanao last December, Xavier University has launched a joint relocation and resettlement project with the city government of Cagayan de Oro, where Xavier is located, to help the Washi survivors rebuild their lives. Xavier University has offered the right of use of its 5-hectare property in the uptown village of Lumbia to serve as permanent resettlement site for the survivors. The project is called Xavier Ecoville. It will build homes for 500 families who have been displaced by the flash flood. To know more about the project, please visit http://tabangsendong.xu.edu.ph. As announced at this year's conference, the 2012 Annual Conference will be held at Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, from August 23 to 25. The theme is "Catholic Higher Education and Sustainability in the Modern World: From Service-Learning to Social Enterprise." The Student Forum will be extended to 5 days, from August 21 to 25, and will include an intensive workshop on service-learning and social enterprise.

News from Assumption University (THAILAND) ;

Assumption University's ABAC Flood Relief Service Alliance Center's

Donating goods and food for flood victims

Responding to the prevalent inundation of Bangkok and the massive floods in surrounding provinces and in Bangkok, the University's Rector Magnificus (installed since November 1, 2011) Rev. Brother Dr. Bancha Sanghiran, f.s.g. has established an Assumption University-ABAC Flood Relief Service Alliance Center (ABAC Flood R-SA Center) to ensure effective management of donations currently provided by various organizations, the provision of necessary information and assistance by volunteers to affected public and flood victims, the formulation of measures and plans to take care of students, in particular international students, residing in private dormitories around Suvarnabhumi campus, and the fostering of cooperation among various units within the University with external organizations. The University has also opened a special Bank account at the Bank of Ayudhaya, Hua Mak Branch, account number 425-1-37156-9 for people and/or institutions wishing to render financial support to flood victims.
Assumption University's Suvarnabhumi campus, located in the neighboring province of Samutprakarn will serve as a flood relief center, should the floods in the province intensify and affect the general public.

A Communication Campaigns class at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI is seeking Asian students with whom they can communicate across borders and cultures using digital and social media as part of their Senior Class project, a global hunger awareness campaign.

This is NOT a fundraising effort, but a public information and dissemination campaign.

Class client is the World Food Programme in partnership with Yum Brands. (WFP.org and Yum.com)

Any class interested in peace and justice studies, intercultural communication, communication and advocacy, political science, and in other subjects relevant to the cause of disseminating information about world hunger would be most welcome by Marquette students.
