Nanzan University President, Michael Calmano, S.V.D. attends the ASAPC SVD-Administrated University Presidents’ Meeting held in Kupang in Indonesia

January 22-27, 2012

Following on from the previous meeting of representatives of universities in Asia established by the Catholic Society of the Divine Word, which was held at the Holy Name University in the Philippines in January 2010, this year’s meeting was held in the central region of West Timor, Indonesia, at the Widya Mandira Catholic University in the city of Kupang. The  meeting was attended by presidents and other representatives of universities in Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Papua New Guinea, Taiwan and Japan. The higher education related initiatives of the Society of the Divine Word were reconfirmed at the meeting, and it was approved that the guidelines drafted between the Society’s headquarters in Rome and the universities will be reviewed.

It is interesting to note that while it is said that 90% of the population of Indonesia are Muslims, because of history of being occupied by Portugal and the Netherlands, the majority of people living on the island of Timor are Catholic.
